DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO JUST CAN’T FAIL?

One of those people who everything they do just works.

Build an app? Gets 10,000 users.
Creates a training course? Earns $1,000,000.
Starts a podcast and makes $100,000 per month in his first year.

One of those people?

I do. I know several.

And honestly, they used to really bug me.

What was so special about them?

Why did everything they do turn to gold, but no matter how hard I hustled, I couldn’t get any traction?

What’s the secret?

I’ll tell you exactly what the secret is…

A few years back I read The 4-Hour Workweek and got really excited about building iPhone apps. My vision was to build a few apps, make a pile of cash, and retire to Costa Rica.

And then I did what few people do.

I actually built two apps.

THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS, NO ONE
BOUGHT THEM.

I LOST over $1,000.

Which just made me even more frustrated.

Then last year, I finally figured out the secret. I found out what my successful friends did that made their projects suceed.

…and that is when everything changed for me.

A few months later I launched my first Videofruit course. Within 96 hours it did over $25,000 in sales.

What was the difference?

Why did the iPhone apps flop and the course take off?

Simple.

I grew an email list.

email-list

Building a high-quality email list is the single most powerful thing you can do to grow your business.

If you are just starting your business or trying to successfully move away from a service-based business, a quality email list is your golden ticket.

But how do you build an email list?

HOW TO BUILD AN EMAIL LIST
– THE RIGHT WAY

But it wasn’t always easy.

If I had heard the phrase, “The money is in the list” one more time, I might have thrown up.

Every blog post I read and podcast I listened to talked about this mysterious email list. But NO ONE would tell me exactly how to build an email list (or how to make money from it).

Then I would read quotes from people with big established platforms. People like Jon Acuff, Michael Hyatt and Pat Flynn.

They would say things like…

“When I started this blog, I made the newbie mistake of not including a way to accumulate email addresses. No newsletter, no opt-in form, nothing.”

But again, no actionable takeaways for me.

No system I could follow.

No blueprint.

Finally after months and months of frustration, I said “Screw it!”

The only way for me to figure it out was to experiment and learn the hard way.

So I started the Videofruit blog. I started studying what Gary Vaynerchuk, Seth Godin and Ramit Sethi were doing to grow their lists.

I would find a strategy, install it and then measure the results. I repeated this process until I finally found a handful of strategies that worked REALLY well.

Then I took these strategies, improved them and helped pioneer a new list-building system that’s now being used by the same people I learned from in the beginning.

Now, only 18 months later, I’ve been able to work with and coach some of the biggest names in online marketing: Michael Hyatt, Jeff Goins, Jon Acuff, Hubspot and KISSmetrics (among others).

Also, I started a coaching program for Videofruit readers who were just starting out, and refined the system even more by walking more than 30 clients through the process.

WHATEVER YOU DO, AVOID THESE 5 THINGS (WHEN BUILDING YOUR LIST)!

There is one thing you have to avoid when building your list and launching your first product.

A fatal mistake.

There are 5 mistakes I constantly see people making that derail them and crush their chances of making it..

On my journey from 0 to 10,000 subscribers, I encountered each one of these and was able to beat them. You will face each one of them on your journey. But you HAVE TO OVERCOME them if you’re going to reach your goal of growing an email list.

Building your entire business off stuff you learn in blog posts and podcasts

Most “experts” will teach you to build your business by mapping out a gigantic 75-page business plan and then executing each step of it.

As entrepreneurs, we know that’s a silly way to do things.

It sounds nice and warm and cuddly. But it’s completely ignorant of the way business actually works.

One of the biggest problems I see us making is swinging to the other end of the spectrum.

13

We take “lean start-up” to mean “You don’t need a plan; you can figure out everything as you go.”

This is just as silly.

Deriving 100% of your strategy and business acumen from blog posts and podcasts is like becoming a doctor by reading WebMD articles.

There is a better way. A more efficient and thorough way to learn what you need to know.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GUIDE.

Not knowing how to make money from your list

Now that you have a list, what do you do with it?

You’d be shocked how many times this happens.

Someone spends months (years, even), builds up a solid list of 1,000 to 10,000 subscribers and then?.

Nothing.

They have no idea what to do next.

Instead of using that list to discover exactly what their readers want, then creating and launching that product, they flounder.

The truth is you don’t need 100,000 readers to create a sustainable income.

My first product was launched to 26 subscribers. 26!

Which leads us to mistake #3.

Thinking you need more subscribers than you actually do

You don’t have to have a gigantic email list to make extremely good money. I always thought that to have a $10,000 launch I needed 10s of thousands of people on my list.

But that’s just not true.

Here are a few numbers. These are actual launch numbers from me and a few friends.

Your results will vary.

There are a lot of moving parts to consider in the numbers above.

But it’s a mistake to think you have to work for 3 years to build an email list before being able to create sustainable and reliable income from it.

#4.
Focusing on the wrong platforms (like Instagram and Twitter)

Look…

Every new platform that comes out will be more “popular” than the next.

Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
Snapchat

Each one has grown faster and received more press than the previous ones. Which means you read more about them than any other channel.

But the truth is this…

Nothing even comes close to touching email when it’s time for your readers to take action.

Trying to do everything by yourself

One common problem is thinking you can do everything by yourself.

Reading blog posts?
Listening to podcasts?
Reverse-engineering what other people are doing?

That stuff will only take you so far.

You need more.

You need accountability and direction from someone who has been where you are trying to go.

Someone to hold your hand, push you when needed, encourage you when needed and hold you ACCOUNTABLE.
